According to the CDC, about 37 million Americans suffer from diabetes. That’s 1 in 10 people. And when it comes to prediabetes, it’s around 4 in 10 people. In short, diabetes affects an astounding number of people, but there are things we can do.
Kelli Timmersman, the Director of Healthy Living at the Duluth Area YMCA, stopped by The Lift to talk prevention, “Type 2 diabetes is when you body become resistant to insulin so you are no longer able to successfully use the glucose that you put into your body.” She adds we might be a risk due to a variety of factors which include:
- Having an immediate family member who suffers from diabetes
- Those over the age of 45
- Being overweight, having high blood pressure
- Leading an inactive life style
- Being diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy
You can watch out for pre-diabetes by looking out for these risk factors or getting a blood sugar test at the doctors. This test offered through the CDC can help you with your own self-assessment.
